England striker Rickie Lambert watched on from the side lines as HMS Temeraire played host to the Royal Navy’s Regional Football Tournament this week.
Rickie was attending as part of the England Footballers Foundation’s on-going support of The British Forces Foundation which exists to help boost the morale of our Armed Forces personnel at home and abroad.
The final was contested by Royal Navy Scotland and The Royal Marines who successfully defended their title by winning 4-2 on the day despite the threat of a late comeback.
With many of the Royal Marine team having recently served on Operations in Afghanistan, Rickie’s visit was a poignant reminder that the squad are proud and honoured to be associated with The British Forces Foundation and recognise the sacrifices and commitment involved in serving the country.
After presenting the trophy to the winning team and a signed England shirt to Man of the Match Shea Saunders, Rickie said: “I’ve really enjoyed coming down today and meeting the people who go out and put their lives on the line defending our country. We want to help the forces and I was more than happy to come and show the players’ support.”
